Happy New Yea's 2014

Well dear readers, it's already two weeks into the New Year and  I finally got my new laptop. I just got it tonight; thankfully in one piece and no damage.  Its been nice taking a break from the internet but I did miss reading everyone's posts. I had free reign on my husband's laptop but I'm not much of Mac person.

In these past weeks I was busy making presents for the families and trying to catch up on a few projects and adding news ones. I had a great visit from my mom and nephews. Spent a quiet new years at home. Did some thrift and a bit of sewing.

Im not sure that I did this last year but this year I am planning New Years Goals not resolutions. To me, the word resolutions has a negative connotation attached to it whenever New Years rolls around. I know that 75% of my resolutions have fallen to the side and I have felt very bad about myself for not completing them. Goals, you can work at a steady pace and not feel like you bad if you get side tracked.

My goals for 2014:

1) Knit at least one garment. I have tried on several occasions to start a project only to notice that they are too big. I need to check my gauge more often.

2) Have more self confidence. I love wearing vintage-inspired/retro clothing. I have a ton of skirts that I don't wear because I'm afraid  that it wont be flattering. I want to wear what I want and not be weighed down but what goes on in my head.

3) Learn to grade patterns. I have a lot of vintage patterns from the 1950s. However, I'm not (or will I ever be) a 36" bust. I want to learn to grade up so I can make and wear some of the awesome blouse and dress patterns I have.

4) Keep up on house chores.  I've gotten a lot better at doing chores  since getting married and getting our own place. But I still HATE to fold and put away clothes. It is the chore that I will put off as much as I can. I want to get better at putting them away and the dishes.

5) Be happy with who I am. This one sounds so easy but it sure as heck  isn't. I'm getting better at being comfortable with myself but I still need more work.

There you have it. Some simple goals. I may add more as the year advances but for now they'll do.  Hopefully I'll be making a few more posts now that I have a laptop of my own.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

  3. Yay!!!! Welcome back and tons of happy congrats on your new laptop! Great goals for 2014. Numbers 2 and 5 speak to me in particular as well, as they're key points in my life that I've been actively working on for a number of years now. Happily, I can report, I've made strides with each, especially in the past couple of years.

Wishing you and your family an amazing, happiness filled 2014, dear Mariela!

  4. Love your list!! I can't wait to see all the projects you have in store this year. Especially about grading patterns. I have no clue how to do it and will also NEVER be a 36" bust and need more options.

It is so hard to love yourself. Even those considered the most beautiful always pick apart every little thing. You are a lovely and beautiful woman!

    1. Aww thanks Sean. It's so sad that society teaches us (especially women) to tear ourselves and others apart. In trying to change that. I don't want my future children to be like that.

  5. you made a great list and i´m sure you will fulfill. i totally agree being happy with who you are sounds that easy but in reality it´s the hardest, i constantly have inner struggles and doubts about myself but i never give up that´s the most important, one day i will reach the day i please myself totally with the person i am ;)

    1. Thanks Mary Lou! Its an unnecessary struggle that the media places on us (men too) but mostly women. I mean a choice that I don't want my future children dealing with so much doubt and self -loathing.

  6. I like your resolutions, especially the last one. With so many sources telling us we're not good enough and need to change, it really is a rebellious act to be OK with yourself!

    1. Thanks Bex. It's rather sad that being oneself is considered rebellious. We should be happy to be ourselves.

  7. Good luck with your goals. They seem like a really good array of targets to focus on for the year. Having more self confidence is a goal I set for myself as well, however its also a goal that is constantly in flux. Be sure to take note of those special moments when you feel good about yourself, they can be helpful times to recall when you need a little extra pick me up.

    1. Thanks Deborah. Self confidence is a fickle dame. You think you have her down and swoop she changes her mind. I am also trying very hard not to compare myself to others. Let me tell you, that has made a huge difference.

  8. I've battled with #5 my whole life and can massively relate. It's really only been in the past five years, working at it very consciously, that I've stopped loathing and learned to better accept and appreciate my body. I think you're beautiful and am bet, just as I am, that you're far harder on yourself on that front than anyone else ever would be.
