Still here and there

It's been a while. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the weather. I decided to take a small break from blogging. I still read and commented on blogs I follow. I felt that my everyday life isn't as exciting or interesting as some of you out there. My day-to-day isn't all that different. Chores, breakfast, feeding Ridley and working on some project. I don't usually go thrifting unless I have something else to do in town. No point in wasting gas just so I can go shopping. I try to do several errands whenever I have the truck.

Over the last few weeks, I've been working my hand at altering a vintage pattern, mending and fixing the waistbands of a few skirts, altering and fixing sweaters. I had a few successes and a few failures. I had great luck finding  sweaters for the colder months.

I was able to find my first vintage Pendleton sweater. A nice Navy blue wool sweater. I'll probably need to wear a camisole underneath it since most wool makes me itchy.

I also found this awesome red wool sweater by St. Croix. I thinks it's vintage from the looks of the label. I love the bright red color. It also had these awesome armpit gussets. It has a few tiny tears but I fixed them and it looks fantastic.

I bought this beauty on the same trip as the Pendleton. I almost passed it up thinking it was a small but (woo-hoo!) it was a large. It fits me beautifully.  I love that the color combo isn't totally whore-y. It's muted and classy. I can't wait to wear this in with winter with a nice wool skirt.

The last few trips to the thrift stores have proved fruitful. I've gotten a lot of wool fabric. I have three very vintage friendly colors that will be turned into winter skirts. Now if only I would find a cute pair of winter boots.

Whenever I go out to thrift stores I always keep my eye out for vintage notions: buttons, zippers, that sort of thing. I went shopping in one of the bigger thrift stores in Carson when I cam across a giant metal cookie box. I love looking through them because you never know what you will find. It was full of vintage buttons. These were the ones that I could used and weren't super tiny. Like for baby's clothes.

I love looking for belts that I can remake myself. I got this lovely belt for 50 cents. It was half off. It's so cool even Jess liked it. I'm going to change the belt to an elastic one.

These are my Sputnik earrings. I found these at the Carson Goodwill. They were hidden in a plastic tub of crappy broken jewelry. The base of them is made out of cork. I've never seen anything like that. I love them.

I bought a few other things but right now I can't really remember what. Last week I got the crazy knitting bug again. I started and redid these gloves a good 3 or 4 times. I couldn't find a pattern I liked so I kept undoing my work. I fianlly found a pattern I liked but it didn't have a thumb gusset so I tried my hand at altering the pattern. It wasn't hard. I followed the directions on one of my favorite patterns. it turned out pretty well. I used some yarn I'd had for years. My grandma Ines sent it to me years ago since she knew I liked making things.

Since the hubby and I havent gone out a lot lately, I haven't done my hair all that much. We went out for Cinco de Mayo and I did my hair and wore my South of the Border skirt. Unfortunately I didn't get an outfit pic (like usual). I really like curling my hair with a wet set. The curls last a lot longer and you can manipulate them easier than with a curling iron.

Day 1

Day 2: I brushed it out. I still had curl left so I made a bumper bang and put the rest up in a pin curl look.

I'm sure I left something out but I just wanted to let everyone Im alive and doing well. I have a few projects to finich before packing to visit the families back in California. We're taking a mini-vacation and visiting the family. It'll be a nice break from our routine.

I leave with Ridley. Cuddling in his momma's wool sweater.

  2. That belt is pretty sweet! It will look great as an elastic belt. Loving your hair pics, too! Can't wait until mine grows back out and I have more options. Have a great weekend and enjoy your mini-vacation!

    1. Thanks. Keeping at shoulder length and in layers has done wonders for better hairstyles.

  3. I always look for buttons and sewing notions when I go to a thrift store too. They are so handy to have and it's cheaper than buying them new. Your hair looks great, and I love the glasses.

    1. Thank you. Yeah I think I've only bought a few new zippers from Joann's in the last months. Besides I love the packaging on vintage notions.

  4. It's nice to have a break from time to time. Blogging can be quite time consuming!
Those Sputnivk earrings are rather glitzy and funky! Love the seahorse belt too! Opshops (thriftshops) are great for sewing bits and pieces, I buy up whenever I spot them, it's so handy to be able to find what you need in your own stash.
Fun with hair! Sometimes I think maybe if I cut my hair I could do more with it, but it took me sooo long to grow it! I love both look you've accomplished! Would love to see that South of the Border skirt on you!
Right, I need to finish up the fifties frock I've been making, Im sooo close to having it all done!

    1. I love bloggin but sometimes not much is going on in my life I need to start thinking up a few tutorials or something. I used to wear my hair long too but my ends get really stringy after a certain length. Since my hair is wavy it really lends itself to layers. Some days I get a really nice feathered look without doing anything special.

  5. Love your looks, you're too cute! I know what you mean. I'm going to be taking a break from blogging. For me there is too much going on and blogging will suffer for it. Anyway, it's great to hear from you!

    1. Thank you! Taking breaks are necessary otherwise we go crazy and start hating the things we like. It go through cycles of making, knitting, crocheting and sewing. Drives my husband crazy that I always have several projects going.

  6. Your hair is so cute! Sounds like you have been very busy, sometimes it is so hard to find thing to blog about when your day to day is spent mostly at home. That has been an issue for me for sure, a very unglamorous life I lead, lol!

  7. I'm still absolutely crazy about that beautiful bedspread. You are so very talented! The blonde in your bangs is adorable too! I'm screwing up the courage to add some raspberry red to my hair in time for riot.

  8. Thanks Mysti! The nice thing about hair is that you can always bleach it , color it , or cut it if you don't like the way it looks. I'm going for a haircut soon and dyeing my hair a darker cherry red. I love the blonde chunk and my hubby loves it pink. I guess we'll see what turns up.

  9. Ha ha! At least I am not alone in feeling like at times I don't have enough going on to blog about, it seams as though I am always busy but with a lot of everyday things that is the stuff people don't want to or need to know. As usual you found some nice things and you look very cute and stylish!

    1. Thank you. I have plenty of time just not enough to blog about. I try to keep things positive and neutral on my blog. Life is complicated enough I don't need to add more to my life by putting my business out there.

  12. Oh my goodness, that sea horse (or do you see them more as dragons - sea dragons perhaps? :)) belt is beyond cool! Fantastic find - as are all of these lovely pieces. I enjoy shopping for cold weather threads during the summer (and vice versa) too, you can sometimes get better deals on sweaters and the like during the sweltering months, I find. Have fun with all your new treasures!

Wishing you a beautiful June, dear gal!

    1. I don't know if it's a seahorse or a dragon but it's pretty cool either way. I usually don't look for winter pieces but this year I've kept it in mind.

  14. Love seeing the pictures of you Mariela, that blonde in your hair is really cute and suits you. It's hard to keep up with blogging and commenting all the time, ironically when I've lots to blog about it usually means that I don't have time to blog! Great finds too, you always find great earrings. xx

    1. Aww thank you. I love the blond and my husband loves it when I dye it hot pink. It looks good both ways but blonde is a lot easier to upkeep. I do love my earrings. I just wish I'd remember to wear them out more.

Nevertheless, cool post and I love that pic of your kitty! Soooo cute! My cat loves my husband's fleece hoodies in winter. They become her cat beds.

  18. Wow....look at your hair! It looks beautiful. I wish I could master some vintage styles, they would probably work well with my curly hair but I just don't seem to have any styling ability. I LOVE your glasses too, they are gorgeous!!! Xx
