Afghan is Done!

The wind outside is howling, there are grey clouds on the horizon and we are suppose to get some snow showers tonight. It's perfect weather for bundling up, getting a nice cup of tea, and starting a crocheting or knitting project. That or baking some delicious cookies.
Last week I began crocheting an afghan to get rid of all the small scraps of yarn that I've been saving. I saw no point in getting rid of them since small bits of yarn lend themselves well to making throw pillows and blankets. I used this vintage pattern.  I really liked this pattern for a bedspread but I'm afraid it would cost me over $100 in materials since we have a queen size bed.  I made a lap blanket measuring 48" x 60" It took me about 5 days to make 80 squares. I was really cranking them out. I used worsted yarn and a size 8 crochet hooks so they were very easy to make. I love making squares. I don't really like joining the squares  and then rows is my least favorite part of crocheting projects. I was able to join everything in one day so it wasn't too bad. I have this issue where once I'm about  90% finished with a project I just want to jump on the next one and not finish the current project. I'm slowly training myself not to do this.
I had hoped that it would have been big enough to use on our bed but this way it's easier to way and throw about. I ran our of yarn so I didn't add a finished border. I'll get around to it eventually. Maybe.

A couple of weeks ago I bought some vintage millinery. They are in great condition with no cracks or damage. I have been seeing some pretty pretty combs .  I'm still trying to figure out how I want to make my combs but in the meantime I made this brooch. I used a wood button I bought at Joann's to attach the brooch pin and fruit stem. I used an epoxy to adhere everything. Let me tell you, epoxy can really stink up a room and give you a massive headache. But it was all worth it. I love the way it turned out.

We're about two weeks away from going to visit our families for Thanksgiving. I'm so excited! I get to see my mom and siblings as well do some much needed shopping. Not just for new clothes but thrift store shopping too. I just have to remember not to spend too much money. We're trying to save up.

My mom's 50th birthday is next year. She keeps telling me how tired and stressed out she is. I've been thinking that since it's her 50th birthday we (my siblings and I) should take her to Vegas. She really loves Vegas and really deserves to relax even if it's just for the weekend. I want to take her to an  all male strip review but have mixed feelings about it. On one hand I know she'll love it and have looks of fun. On the other hand, I don't want Jess to think it's okay for him to go to strip clubs. I just wouldn't feel right if Jess went to strip club and came home all horny and looking for action. I'd feel like I was being use. He says he's okay with it but I'm not so sure.

I hope everyone has a productive warm week.  I leave you with this photo of Ridley and his handy work.

  1. I'm guilty of cruising down first to see the Ridley pic before I read your post properly...is that bad?! Sorry if it is...
Anyways, yay for being a clever minx and making warm snugglies...and I'm LOVING that fruity number! Reminds me I picked up a divoon grape brooch a month or so ago and I haven't worn it yet! Dreadful!
I'm not especially bothered by strip bars in general...oddly though, I am repelled by male ones, probably because that isn't my kind of guy; they don't make me remotely frisky! I did once go with G to a strip show, many years ago, because I wanted to know what they were about...and it was pretty awful on the whole! There were a couple of girls that seemed appealing enough, but mostly it was what we call "slappers", and none of the guys there seemed turned on, it was just a laugh to them. I suspect that's what it's about, having a laugh with their mates. The important thing is that if you are not comfortable with your man going to one, then he shouldn't.He needs to respect your feelings. And if you aren't bothered, then fine!

    1. It's not bad. It just shows that he's a cutie. Thank you. I know I don't like over-built men either. I like my men chubby and sweet.

  2. Wow, you are so talented! The blanket is so pretty and I love the pin. By the way my kids do the same thing with the TP, except sometimes they grab the end and run to the other end of the house.

  3. I adore you blanket it is lovely!
I think you feel the same about this time of year as I do. Just this morning I was thinking. I should pick up a crochet hook again this Winter. (I think it's been at least 3 years since I have done any crocheting.) I will start off with something easy. I was thinking coffee cup cozies! *heheeh* Also I thought today would be a good day to bake a cake. (Not something I do often. Usually only Birthdays and special occasions.)
Lastly my Mom's 50th is next year too!! I couldn't afford to take her to Vegas so I suppose I will buy her a flashy gold bra or something. ;)

    Have a sweet weekend.
    Ridley is so cute!

    1. Thank you. For a couple of years I didn't make anything. I just didn't feel like. I've been thinking about knitting up some mug cozies too. I've noticed my tea gets cold really quick now that it's cooler out.

    1. Thank you1 I've been wanting to start buying vintage afghans but my husband feels weird about buying used blankets.
Your fantasy sounds so romantic and free spirited. I've always wanted to travel but I hate the amount of time it take to get anywhere.

  6. Fantastic work on both projects! I just adore your dangling fruit salad style brooch, it really looks like something that could have stepped right out of the 40s. Awesome job, dear gal!

    1. Thank you! I like bright afghans but I had a lot of natural colors left over.

  8. Your patchwork blanket is beautiful, I can only do very basic crochet but I would love to get good enough to make something like that. That sounds great fun for you and your mum to go to Vegas, I guess the equivalent here would be somewhere like Blackpool! Not quite as exciting as Vegas. Pat got one of his workmates to do a jokey strippagram for me years ago, for my 26th birthday, but I've never been to a strip club, those kind of men don't appeal to me either, I like someone with a bit more character in his looks rather than a typical pretty boy. xx

    1. If you have a basic understanding of crochet and the terms I think you'll be fine. My mom taught me with diagrams so now as an adult I;m learning to read patterns for crochet and knitting.
Your hubby has an awesome sense of humor!
